Owl Sighting

The owls still haven't begun nesting (or, if they have, they aren't doing it in my box), but they are still in my area; I was just filling my bird feeder when I noticed an owl in one of the branches overhead. It was probably waiting for a mouse to visit the bird feeder.

  1. All afternoon the female owl perched in the open frame of my owl house. This is the third year that I have enjoyed the owls. I missed the owl cam last year and look forward to having an idea of what's going on inside the box day by day. Thanks for continuing this project.

  2. I read all the way through your 2007 Screech Owl journal and loved it. We have a resident Eastern Screech Owl in our back yard. He snoozes in our pine tree every day. We've mounted an owl house in hopes that he (I think he) brings home a mama. How do I know if the owl we've so fondly dubbed Mr Spock is a he or she?

I often check to see if any owl activity has been reported. I am disappointed to see that nothing noteworthy has occured....2 years in a row without a nesting??? Each passing day increases the chances of that occuring.
My hope is that it's not too late...Chris, you have changed my outlook to nature and life forever, and for that I will be eternally thankful.

I had an Eastern Screech owl in my nest box for the first time, this January '09. Judging by various indicators, he'd been roosting in the box for a month by the time we noticed him. He only stuck around one more month. I had hoped he'd bring back a mate and we'd have a family using the box soon. I enjoy viewing your web cam posts, Chris. Thank you for sharing them.

I look forward to watching the owls this season! It was lonely last year without them. I will continue to check the website obsessively...

No owls in the box after all? How sad for us.

  7. I keep checking back to see if you've got owls nesting. Guess it's not happening this year. I do have an owl, back in my owl box. Haven't seen a mate yet, but I'm thrilled to have this owl to watch.
