iPhone 2.1 Software Brings SVG Support

Kudos to Apple - in the iPhone 2.1 software, released today, the Safari web browser has acquired support for the World Wide Web Consortium's Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) specification, a feature that I'd sorely missed until now. What a very pleasant surprise.

Anyone unfamiliar with SVG can see some examples of what it, mixed with Javascript, can do on my Automatons page. Note that because SVG is resolution independent, it makes full use of the 163 pixel-per-inch iPhone display, so it not only looks clean and sharp at its default size, but you can just keep zooming in to see more detail.

It must be said that the iPhone's new SVG support won't set any speed records (unlike the desktop version of Safari), but the iPhone's resources are limited, so that's to be expected. It's just great to see this technology supported in yet another browser/platform.
